Weather and Climate

Third Grade Meteorologists have been exploring their second science unit by gathering evidence from texts, investigating and collecting data using digital simulations, developing models and discussing their ideas with classmates.

In the role of meteorologists working for the fictional Wildlife Protection Organization (WPO), students investigate weather patterns as they solve the problem of where to establish an orangutan reserve.. Some key concepts they will be exploring include:

  • Meteorologists make weather measurements in the same way each time so they can make comparisons
  • Temperature data for one month can be described as the range of daily high temperatures of the whole month. Precipitation data for one month can be described as the total precipitation over the whole month.
  • Although the temperature in a place can change each day, there is a pattern that can be described by the range of temperatures.

We encourage you to ask your 3rd Grade Meteorologist about what they are learning in class!

  • How can meteorologists describe weather in a way that helps them make comparisons?
  • Is there a pattern to the weather that we can use to make predictions?
  • How can we predict what the weather in a place will be like many years from now?
